Employee Life Story: Rebecca Gatzemeier
I promised that I would introduce our employees to you and let them tell a little bit about themselves. Our first introduction is Rebecca. When I asked her to write her story she was more than willing and had it done in a night. This is how Rebecca works. Quick, fast, and efficient.
I remember the day she and her job coach walked in to apply for a job. I believe my son’s words were, “Hire her now.” Rebecca has been with us since day one and we hope she will be with us forever. Despite a traumatic brain injury, she is as smart as they come and picks up every task quite quickly. So what sets her apart then?
Her kindness and love of people. She is a team builder, and more than that she is a mother hen. She takes care of all of us and looks out for everybody. When not working, you will find her lunching with other employees or shopping with the girls. She just recently passed her driving test and will often help other employees get places. Rebecca is loved by her co-workers and customers. A big thank you to her for making Howdy a better place.
And now, Rebecca’s story…
Hello to everyone my name is Rebecca Gatzemeier and I work at Howdy Homemade Ice Cream Shop. This is my life story, I was born on September 19, 1996 and when I was three years old, I was hit by a car as well as my mom and my brother Brent and the saddest part about the time that I was hit by a car was that my mom and I survived but my brother Brent died right away at the scene of the auto-pedestrian accident. It was the hardest thing that I had to go through because I did not get to say good bye to my brother Brent.
When I was hit by a car I ended up in the hospital with a broken left leg and traumatic brain injury or TBI for short. It took a while to get over the broken bone but I still have trouble with the TBI, with memory loss and the way I act sometimes.
I have lost my brother Brent, my grandfather Kurt, and my father Duane. I have lost my brother Brent on May 30, 2000 when I was 3 ½ years old after an auto-pedestrian accident. I have lost my grandfather Kurt when I was 14 years old on November 4, 2010 after not getting enough oxygen. I have lost my father when I was 18 years old on April 11, 2015 after extended problems due to complications from diabetes.
I went to regular school and actually graduated with my class. I got my driver licenses but not until I was 21 years of age. I worked at Zurchers party & wedding store that is in brickyard and I also worked at Baskin Robinson that is in sugarhouse.
I started working at Howdy Homemade Ice cream Shop 1 ½ years ago. I feel safe working there with the people that work there along side of me. I love working there because I get to work with amazing people and with a friend as well. It brings in me the opportunity to meet new and exciting people.
